Public Education and Awareness
"Dedicated to fire safety and burn prevention though public education", the Alliance was formed in 1982 by three members of the Illinois Fire Chiefs Association who worked to make smoke detectors mandatory in residential homes in Illinois. This smoke detector campaign has greatly expanded, developing into the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance (IFSA).
"Use Candles with Care" is the theme of the National Fire Protection Association's 2005 Fire Prevention Week campaign. According to NFPA, "Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. The fire began on October 8, but continued into and did most of its damage on October 9, 1871."
Danville Firefighters Local 429 is a member of the International Association of Fire Fighters. The IAFF has more than 2,900 affiliates, representing fire fighters in more than 3,500 communities in the U.S. and Canada. The 267,000 members of the IAFF are the nation’s full-time professional fire fighters and paramedics, who protect the lives and property of 85 percent of the nation’s population.
According to their site, "The Associated Fire Fighters of Illinois serves as the Illinois state labor association of the International Association of Firefighters. The AFFI represents over 170 locals which are the recognized collective bargaining agents for over 11,000 full time professional firefighters serving in cities and fire districts throughout the State of Illinois."
